  okay...my evil reactionary brother in law is one of my faves.... .

  I'm not a HUGE Warhol (less so for Lichtenstein) but I would say that he largely managed to avoid that particular criticism because his silkscreen prints and painting of household items were supposed to be a statement on how he viewed the world of Pop culture and commercialism... In that sense, he made a statement and created an art of sorts that reflected on how he looked on things...

  Course, one could argue that that's all a bunch of Mumbo Jumbo... but that's how his work came to be percieved.. along with his comments and writings...

  But Kinkade?... what's he trying to SAY exactly with all these samey cottages surrounded by pink and blue bushes? Done Over, and over, and over, and over again?....

  "Thanks for the Dough" perhaps? :O)

  Ever get the feeling your just not "normal"?

  even when i was a dub i felt this way.

  i mean, i would just stand there at gatherings and feel that i was in my own world -- that, somehow, everyone else was "in" and i was "out.

  " i never felt this way at formal gatherings -- meetings, assemblies, etc -- only in most social settings.

  Normal? - I only cared about things like that back when I was in my teens or early Twenties... (and KNEW I wasn't, all the same..)

  Now that I am thirty, I embrace what bit of 'eccentricity' I have about me... I don't care or want to be 'normal' if i can help it.

  Aztec: Well what do you think of BOB ROSS aficionados? LOL... Used to run into those back when I worked in an art store (which, by the way, was a thankfully BRIEF period LOL) and they could be pretty dedicated too! Well,... he did seem like a real nice guy and all, what with his 'Happy' Rocks, and 'Good Little' trees.... But somehow seeing his big goofy afro head on paintbrushes and such.. kinda sets me off my lunch.

  Ang: I really like Vettriano's stuff. If caught my eye the very first time I saw one. He does all these different widely-varied scenes, many with outlandish occurances being depicted, often with these semi-sinister titles... and yet there's an obvious recognizable style throughout them all that is entirely his own... Pretty much the sort of thing one WANTS to accomplish in art or music... Be highly vaied, take risks, and yet - retain a style throughout. Of course, his stuff is appearing on all kinds of commercial items now... But hey, It's the thing to do in this day and age anyways.

  Gambit: Like i said - If any Kinkade did something for you that was positive- then It Is good. Back when he first started to gain a bit of popularity and I saw some of his stuff - I actually liked it a bit at first (like I said - I happen to like little European-looking cottages and houses) It wasn't until I started seeing him having entire galleries of the stuff (all looking very much alike) and had studied up on some art history - that I recognized that what he did was far more a formulae than a geniune artistic expression. Hell, If 'I' had to paint guady-colored cottages over and over and over again - I'd be BORED out of my freaking mind from a lack of expression... no matter what money I was making! - See my point? But Obviously a lot of people do like his stuff.. almost religiously (hmm.. wonder if I'll ever manage to have 'followers' when 'I' paint?? ....call em' 'The Shortall's' maybe... and people in art stores all over will cringe when one of them wanders in, like: "Psst... watch out! That guy over there? - Nuther one of em' 'Shortall' fukers..." LOL ....

  Look at it this way, I know PLENTY of people that absolutely HATE anything that Picasso or Dali did, and consider them nothing more than a bunch of 'madmen'.... :o)

  Freedom and Gambit: Even though I am very vocal about what 'I' happen to like and admire in art, as well as what I don't like...

  I DO have one particular rule that I think supercedes all the rest in terms of art, music, and whatever else:

  simply put:

  'If you like it, and it brings you joy - then it IS good.'

  On the flip side of the coin, While I do happen to think there's lots of problems with out CURRENT Administration... what Country is out there really, that has a perfect government after all? At least living in the States, we do have the freedom (to a point) to speak our mind like Johnny, or to criticize if we so choose... And at least here - we do have some opportunity.. to better ourselves and our finances... so that we CAN move to the south of France later... If we so choose... lol

  If you ask me - that certainly beats growing up in a place run by some dictator who'd cut your arms off for even looking funny... Having to wear a towel over your head... and where women have to keep all their parts covered at all times because they are looked on as filthy second-class citizens...

  Make no mistake... Despite the good and the bad as well - I'm glad and Thankful to be an American.

  Freedom,

  In some defense of Wyland, I do happen to think that out of the three I mentioned... Wyland is by far the most tasteful. He doesn't get too carried away or guady with his colours.. But creates a nice balance throughout. Lassan sometimes gets a little too 'gooey' if you ask me.. (And I do admire his sculptures! They're great!) ...It's just that to me, Him and those fellow artists he supports in his galleries (he is a nice guy) just don't happen to SPEAK to me though their art on who THEY really are or what they're feeling... Because they keep on with the consistent theme of Oceanlife/beaches/bright skies with stars and so on... Ok, sure, from that - I COULD gather that Wyland likes oceanlife (you think! lol) ...But unless i were to read a detailed account of his life or talk to him personally - I wouldn't have a clue as to who he is or what he feels... Because none of this really comes through in his brand of art, and I guess that for me... this is a really important requirement for an artist to have - for me to relate to him. Ultimately, he ends up creating an art this is a PRODUCT first and foremost... Could you imagine him suddenly changing gears and dumping the whole Ocean-thing, and suddenly doing personal portraits of friends or something like that because he felt like it? For myself, I can't see that... I don't even think it would be possible for him - what would THAT do for his business? No.. He's a bit 'trapped' in a sense by the fomulae\business which he created...

  Kinkade on the other hand, really bugs me... And actually I happen to like English cottages and things like that too... and perhaps, If you took one of those pics of his singularily.. they're kinda cute I suppose... But now, here, he's got whole galleries - and they're all full of the same damn picture practically, over and over again.. all with that damn glow-bright paint for the bushes... whole galleries of the stuff... He absolutely says nothing with his work, it's a mass produced PRODUCT.. plain and simple... and lacks in what I think is best in art.. personal expression... But all the same, I've seen people go in there and buy the stuff in droves... so what can you say? If you can fool them into buying it... well then god bless... But that's not 'art' to me... It may as well be one of those damn singing fish for all I know...

  I'm actually going to England on a series of trips next year...(Azzy knows why!) so I found this all kinda funny.

  For the record, I do have one tooth in back that needs a root-canal... But my teeth sure as hell don't look like that! lol

  My Britishness? Sh*t - I'm a Beaufort! My family ruled the damn Island for years... So what if I happen to have a 'Twang' now?! - Time for 'SIR Paul' to return to his homeland and whack some peasants!! LOL... Just kidding!

  Personally, I just view his statement as a jab at the administration... not the general public...

  Really, Most of the American public's too busy in their 'slave labor' to be biting anyone... lol .. OUCH!

  Tink: Yes, I've read that and just about every book on Salvador except one - called I think 'The Shameful Life of Salvadore Dali' LOL (or something like that - I saw it at a library recently... I'll have to get it!) as well as a large number of Picasso books.. (and there are TONS of those!)

  Yes I love Dali's work AND his character... He was really a pretty humble guy, especially when comparing himself to past masters, and also was very dedicated to Gala... which unlike Picasso and his 'Goddesses & Doormats' attitude.. was pretty admirable. But he also knew how to be spontaneous and extravegant and entertaining AS A PERSON in public...

  Like Picasso, he could be quite a charmer and entertaining - to me, this is one of the very best traits a real artist can have... The idea of the brooding, sulking, wierd son of a b... that sit's in his room all day and can't relate well to anybody - doesn't sit too well with me... these types usually (in most cases) don't do all that well... until after they're dead that is, and what good is that?

  For myself, having had a touch of acting in my background and a natural like for people (and a penchant for suddenly breaking into song or dance or some other nonsense)... I don't have much problem there... I can't even get through the mall where I used to work without having at least 10-20 people come up for a long chat.. LOL (Takes a long time to shop these days!) ...

  Thanks Aztec Baby... I would not have placed Royo as A 'Fauvist' ...He does emphasize his brushstrokes a fair bit.. but i thought it was a touch rather Impressionistic... I didn't know he was a wild beast! lol

  A guy I know at Centuar Art Gallery did tell me once that guys like Wyland, Lassan, and especially Kinkade (who he was actually talking about) make their prints practically from laserjet... they will barely last your lifetime before they fade...

  I'd view these guys as artists of a sort - but in this case, ones that have COMPLETELY gone the way of being commercial and forsaken the 'artistic' side.... I don't care for this sort of extreme either... Because in a way - They're just businessmen and not artists who happen to do good business.

  A good artist, to me, always strives to expand and better his work - always changing & reaching deeper and deeper into his own life or soul to express himself and how he or she views the world around them (Even Warhol did this well) ....But guys like Kinkade or Wyland really don't do this... They just keep making slight variations on the same damn theme... over and over... and sell them in mass production.

  to me, they're all about money.. not art... Even Picasso, the wealthiest most famous artist of his time never did this - With him, the art came first, and damn all else...
